Google Health is Frightening

Privacy will always be a concern with people's health records. I think you are missing the point of why doctors keep medical records, online or paper, in the first place...

...to analyze, diagnose, advise and prescribe you better. That's it. Paper records with "difficult access" make each of those verbs much harder for doctors to accomplish.

I understand why doctors keep records.

What I don't understand is why there should be a central repository for them that I don't control. I can give my doctor my records on paper, or a flash thumbdrive if I want. But what I won't do is let a company who sells ads off my data keep my most personal details.

A lot of doctors are moving medical records to their "decentralized" computers making it much easier to track, update and send to specialists for second opinion etc.

We don't know the privacy architecture Google has built for our "centralized" health records yet, but I'm sure it will be more secure than the "decentralized" computers at our personal doctor's local practice.

Also, Google said they WEREN"T going to use ads for the Google Health product.

The only situation where I could really see what Google is proposing coming in handy would be in the case of some sort of massive outbreak, along the lines of how they were using data from Google searches to try and track flu infection patterns. Having data from various patients in once central place might make it easier to track the outbreak and pinpoint it's source, how it was spreading, etc. Of course, that's a "what if" scenario, as is what could happen if the data were abused or hacked into somehow. One the pages that I did not Twitter, the pages have not yet been indexed (only been 48 hours since creation). On the pages I did Twitter, following this process, I did find that 75% pages were indexed and cached within 24 hours. I will note that I did use the bit.ly shortener URL but I customized the URL to include the keyword I was targeting for that page. Even though Twitter uses "coolw" on the links, I still thought this may be prudent. Not sure if it is directly related or caused any additional findings.
