Introducing the DTV Countdown Clock!

With all the news about the 700mhz spectrum auctions, I thought it was time to introduce our little friend in the top right corner of your screen. That, my friends and (hopefully loyal) readers, is the time remaining until all the analog television stations in the United States shut off. At the stroke of midnight on February 18th, 2009, engineers across the country will pull large levers which will cause many TV's to start displaying...snow. However, all is not lost, except bad picture quality. Over the past decade, most stations have already began transmitting in the more efficient Digital TV format on a different band. You may have heard of it as HDTV, and think of it as some kind of upscale item. Not so. It's been standard in many European countries for years, and will be the standard here. HDTV is really DTV with a nice marketing name. Over the next two few days until that counter hit the 365 day mark and beyond, we will be providing insight, tips, and information on the history of how the date was set, what will happen, how you should prepare, and how your own government is handling a deadline they themselves set. Don't panic. We've got it all under control.

Being that I am effectively a POV (POVerty-Stricken Citizen - watch your Southpark, folks) I do not have a "fancy" (H)DTV.

I have, however, applied for some sweet coupons towards the purchase of a converter box for when the change comes.

Once I have some sort of response there'll be sure to be posts about the process and whether or not the coupons or the box(es) bought with them work.

Back to converter boxes? This is why I don't watch TV...
