A few days ago I wrote in WID about Muxtape's demise. The blogosphere did a far better job as they could get to the news as it happened.
Today, OpenTape launched, letting anyone with a server, some bandwidth and a brain put together their own Muxtape-like service.
One has to wonder, if Pandora makes good on its "threat" and goes bye-bye, would founder Tim Westergren release the source behind the Music Genome Project as a parting shot at the industry?
This kind of thing was inevitable, really. As the RIAA goes after every technology that allows music to be shared, even the ones with revenue potential that they don't like could simply release their code and vanish, starting an endless game of whack-a-mole. The question is, when will the legal fees begin to become cost-prohibitive? It's hard to sue customers at the same time you're suing every new website you can find. Are there enough lawyers out there? Will the judges ever get tired of it?
More importantly, will Michigan slap MediaSentry for operating as a P.I. without a license? There are now a few open complaints for them running an unlicensed P.I. agency as part of the RIAA's efforts to sue students at Michigan's universities.
Even John Magnum had a license. And that car...
